Henry's machine replaced manual marking with Chinagraph by each glassmaker. Instead Henry would use this machine to accurately mark the top and bottom of patterns to be cut, and the repetitions of the pattern. A different button under the machine was pushed up to make it automatically choose the number of repetitions. The machine used large felt-tip like pens instead of Chinagraph.
